This presentation examines the philosophical, scientific, and ethical challenges confronting psychiatry and psychology in the 21st century. Instead of a progress narrative focusing on technological advances, the presentation looks at the "big picture" aims to provoke reflection over where we stand with regards to the scientific pursuit of good explanations, the metaphysical and pluralistic nature of psychological inquiry, and in addressing radical critiques offered by neurodiversity, mad pride, & service user movements.   • Examine philosophical foundations of psychiatry from classic, critical, and integrative perspectives.

About the Presenter

Dr. Aftab is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Case Western Reserve UniversityEducation: Psychiatry Residency - Case Western Reserve University - University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center (2018)Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship - University of California San Diego (2019)Awais Aftab, MD is Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, and staff psychiatrist at Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare. He completed his psychiatry residency from Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in 2018, and geriatric psychiatry fellowship from University of California San Diego in 2019. He has received numerous national awards and honors, including the prestigious Laughlin Fellowship by the American College of Psychiatrists and the American Psychiatric Association Leadership Fellowship during his psychiatric training. He leads the popular interview series "Conversations in Critical Psychiatry" for Psychiatric Times, which explores critical and philosophical perspectives in psychiatry and engages with prominent commentators within and outside the profession who have made meaningful criticisms of the status quo. He is an executive council member of the Association for the Advancement of Philosophy and Psychiatry, senior editor for the journal Philosophy, Psychiatry, & Psychology, and he has been actively involved in initiatives to educate psychiatrists and trainees on the intersection of philosophy and psychiatry.

The presentation is intended for mental health, health, and public health professionals and students, as well as for professionals in related fields and for consumers, family members, and advocates interested in influencing public policy. The information gained is applicable across settings, as advocacy is a useful tool to understand and master, regardless of the specific focus of personal and professional activities and interests.
