This workshop will describe the basic principles on which Dialectical Behavior Therapy is based, including the underlying theory and main modes of treatment.  In addition, the content of the skills training component will be reviewed.

Workshop Objectives

Based on the content of this workshop, attendees will be able to...

  • Explain the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder as it is reframed as a trauma-based disorder (TBD).
  • Describe the biosocial theory underpinning DBT, and the role invalidation is proposed to play in the emergence of a TBD.
  • List the modes of treatment in DBT and their functions.
  • Explain what is involved in skills training in DBT, and the importance of this component.
  • Describe the role of individual therapy in DBT, including the 4 main techniques employed.
  • Discuss several adjustments necessary for practicing DBT with LGBTQ+ participants.

About the Presenter

Martha Wetter, Ph.D., received her doctorate from the University of KY in clinical psychology and currently works in a private practice in Lexington directing a DBT program.  She is a Linehan-certified DBT therapist and does workshops and consultations with various organizations on trauma-informed care and DBT.  She is on the Board of the Life Activities Center, a trauma-informed recreational program in Woodford Co. KY.
